6" Top Hat

Equipment

  • Fabric scissors
  • Regular Scissors
  • Fabric Adhesive
  • Hot Glue Gun & Glue
  • Pencil / Pen to trace

Materials

  • 1/2 yard Fabric
  • 2 12 x 18 Foam Sheets
  • 1 18 ga Floral Wire
  • 44 inches of Trim Material

Instructions

Making the top hat components

  • Cut out the 2 templates
  • Fold one of your 12 x 18 foam sheets in half and put your "crown" template on it. The folded side should be touching the folded side of your foam.
  • Trace your crown onto the foam board
  • Hold the fold really tight and cut out your crown. (It's like cutting snowflakes - we are going to measure once, cut once, and then unfold it to a larger piece.
  • Using the circle templates - trace the larger circle twice & the smaller circle once. (You'll have 3 circles)
  • Cut out all of your circles

Attach components to fabric

  • Straighten your fabric on a flat surface
  • Add the fabric glue to your components and lay them onto the fabric. I add glue to once piece at a time, flatten it onto the fabric.
  • Place something heavy on top of them until the glue sets (2-4 hours)

Cut fabric

  • Cut each of the pieces out of the fabric leaving about a 1/2" to 1" piece of fabric around the foam

Slit fabric edges

  • Around the edges of each foam piece you're going to cut slits into the fabric. These can be spaced out a 1/2" to 1" apart.

Glue fabric edges

  • Now you're going to glue all of the edges over the side of the foam.

Glue the crown

  • Now you're going to add a bead of glue down the seam of the crown and attach it to make a cone.

Glue the top on

  • Now you're going to add a bead of glue around the larger side of the crown and attach the top.

Wire the brim

  • Now take your floral wire and make it into a circle. Place that circle on the bottom of one of your foam pieces, add glue, and then top with the other piece. (Ugly Side to Ugly Side)
  • We should have 2 pieces to the top hat waiting to be attached to each other. The edges are "messy" but its okay we're going to add trim.

Connect the pieces

  • Eye ball the top of your hat into the center of the brim and glue into place. I add a little glue around the trim, and then "caulk it" into place.

Add the trim

  • Run a bead of glue around the top and bottom seams and slowly add your trim.

Accessorize!

  • Now that the base of your top hat is completed you can decorate it with all of your accessories...
