Step 1: Prep Your Base
Insert a large block of foam into the urn, cutting it to fit securely.
Optional: glue the foam down if this arrangement will stay outside or be moved often.
Add a second layer of foam if needed for extra height.
If using a plastic urn, weight the bottom with bricks or rocks so it doesn’t tip over in the wind.
Step 2: Add Your Thriller (Tall XL Sunflowers)
Start with your 3 XL sunflowers. Place one directly in the center and slightly back, about 30" high.
Place the other two XL sunflowers off to each side but slightly forward and angled. These should be about 24–26” tall.
Fluff and fan out the petals for maximum visual impact.
Always face your largest blooms toward the “front view” and work in a natural triangle to avoid a stiff look.
Step 3: Add Height & Texture with Grasses
Insert 2–3 stems each of the green and burgundy spiky grass, spacing them throughout the back and sides of the arrangement.
These pieces should stand slightly taller than the sunflowers—around 30–34”.
Let them naturally bend to add softness and height.
Step 4: Fill In With Medium and Small Sunflowers
Add 6–7 medium sunflowers to fill in the midsection of the arrangement.
Vary the height between 18–24” so it doesn’t feel flat.
Tuck in 5–6 small orange sunflowers around the base and sides to draw the eye down.
Angle your small sunflowers out to the sides so they “spill” toward the edge of the container.
Step 5: Add Fall Foliage
Add 3 tall bright orange leaf sprays toward the back and side sections. These should pop out 28–30”.
These give the whole design movement and that unmistakable fall vibe.
Step 6: Add Fillers + Berries
Use 2–3 brown/tan filler sprays throughout the middle and sides.
Add 2–3 leaf and berry sprays throughout the lower portion of the design.
These work well tucked in around the base or between sunflowers.
Step 7: Finish With Ivy (Your Spiller)
Insert 2–3 strands of trailing ivy right at the front and corners.
Let it cascade naturally over the sides of the urn, about 12–15” long.
Tuck the ivy in at different points to create depth. Let some pieces hang low while others just graze the edge.
